Learning Goal #2 – Introduction to Microsoft Word: “Students will be able to conduct online research, evaluate and cite sources, and type a one-page research paper using multiple features of Microsoft Word 2016.” (11 Lessons)

Lesson 2.1: Introduction to Microsoft Word LESSON OVERVIEW: Microsoft began in 1975 as a small start-up company with two men who had this crazy idea of getting a computer into every home throughout the country. At the time, most people who did any typing did so on a typewriter. Companies like IBM and Apple were beginning to design small, personal computers, but the computers needed programs. This is where Bill Gates and Paul Allen came in. Today, we will learn about the History of Microsoft and the origins of Microsoft Word.
Lesson 2.2: Using Online Images, Part 1 LESSON OVERVIEW: One of the great features of Microsoft Word is that you can add images to text or even put images in the background of a document. However, before we can get to that point, it’s important that we go back and review some of the reasons why image searches and image usage must be taken seriously. Far too many people are risking a lot of trouble just because they like an image and wanted to use it for themselves. Today, we’ll take a closer look at Copyright and Online Image Usage.
Lesson 2.3: Using Online Images, Part 2 LESSON OVERVIEW: One of the great features of Microsoft Word is that you can add images to text or even put images in the background of a document. However, before we can get to that point, it’s important that we go back and review some of the reasons why image searches and image usage must be taken seriously. Far too many people, adults included, are risking quite a bit of trouble just because they like an image and want to use it for themselves. Today, we’ll review the laws of Copyright and Online Image Usage, then dig a little bit more into some free programs that are available, including Google Picasa.
Lesson 2.4: Headers & Footers LESSON OVERVIEW: Now that we have discussed the history of computers, introduced ourselves to the basics of Microsoft Word, and spent two class periods studying the appropriate use of online images, we’ll now take a closer look at some features of Microsoft Word and get back to writing documents. You’ll gain some understanding of headers, footers, and page numbers that can be helpful in future papers that you write for other classes.
Lesson 2.5: Proofreading – Part 1 LESSON OVERVIEW:The entire purpose of becoming good at using Office Technology is to become a better student in other classes with our papers, research, book reports, presentations, and all kinds of other things we might use a computer for in Middle and High School. But if we are going to become good at writing documents, we need to understand the value of proofreading; our ability to spot errors and make a document look presentable. It’s not enough to just type some words on a page and say we’re done. The document needs to look good for the person who will be reading it (a teacher, a boss, a parent, etc). In today’s class, we will be looking more closely at the process of proofreading.
Lesson 2.6: Proofreading – Part 2 LESSON OVERVIEW:Over the last few lessons, we have been discussing and improving our skills in the Editing & Proofreading process. All of you write papers and reports for different classes, but we often forget that editing is a process that usually takes more time than writing. Getting good at spotting errors and making proper edits will make us better typists in the years ahead. Proofreading, on the other hand, is about making sure that our work actually looks good and is readable. You might even say that proofreading is about making a piece of writing worth reading. It’s not enough to just fix spelling errors if the rest of the document is poorly formatted or if the font is too small or if it just plain looks bad. Today is all about learning to improve the quality of our documents.
Lesson 2.7: Online Research, Part 1 LESSON OVERVIEW:Over the last few lessons, we have been discussing and improving our skills in the Editing & Proofreading process. All of you write papers and reports for different classes, but we often forget that editing is a process that usually takes more time than writing. Getting good at spotting errors and making proper edits will make us better typists in the years ahead. Proofreading, on the other hand, is about making sure that the our work actually looks good and is readable. You might even say that proofreading is about making a piece of writing worth reading. Lesson 2.8: Online Research, Part 2 LESSON OVERVIEW:Now that we have gained some experience working with Microsoft Word and we know how to edit or proofread documents, the time has come to learn a little about the practice of online research. Not everything you find on the Internet is considered good research. In fact, many of the things you find are just flat out wrong. That’s what happens when anyone from anywhere can create a website and call it information. Today, we will learn how to critically evaluate the information we find on the web.
Lesson 2.9: Research Papers, Part 1 LESSON OVERVIEW: Today, we will begin writing our Research Paper, following most of the steps and tips that we’ve learned about Online Research and Microsoft Word. Over the last few weeks, you have gained a number of skills that you need to prove through this paper. This is not a challenge. This is a 40-point assignment that will be graded and will impact your overall score in Office Technology.
Lesson 2.10: Research Papers, Part 2 LESSON OVERVIEW: Today, we are continuing our 2-hour Research Papers, following most of the steps and tips that we’ve learned about Online Research and Microsoft Word. Over the last few weeks, you have gained a number of skills that you need to prove through this paper. This is not a challenge. This is a 40-point research paper that will be graded and will definitely impact your overall score in Office Technology.
Lesson 2.11: Catch Up Day LESSON OVERVIEW: Over the last several weeks, we’ve done so many challenges and picked up so many new skills that it’s time to catch up on unfinished projects. If you are not finished with your Research Papers, today is your day to finish (all of them will be turned in at the end of class). If you are finished with your Research Papers, you will be able to go back and finish other challenges or, after all is done, go back to work on Typing Web Tutor. Remember, a “catch up” day means truly catching up, so don’t waste any time.
